Story

Hi, I’m Mithril Marauder, who many or most of you that have been playing Onward for the last 4 years or longer will know. I’m also a musician who loves to travel. I’m needing your help because I find myself in a suddenly desperate and unfortunate situation: While on a short trip exploring the state of Chiapas in Mexico, on just my second night here, I was crossing the street at a four-way intersection when a public transport minivan turned the corner going fast and hit me. As I lay there in immediate, intense pain, I knew that I was in trouble. The driver got out and I thought he’d help me but instead tried to drag me out of the middle of the road. I begged him not to, fearing for broken bones, but he dragged me anyway and sped off before anyone could see the license plate apparently. I ended up with a broken hip, two bad fractures that would require immediate surgery to fix. With the pressure to have it done in 24 hours and no real way to travel to another city, I had no choice but to get the surgery done in San Cristobal (where I was and still am) at a very sketchy hospital, and just have to hope the job was well done so revision surgery doesn’t need to happen.

The recovery time for something like this is 3-6 months to walk again (without pain hopefully), and 6 months to a year to be fully functional again. I feel like my life is broken along with my body; the life I knew is gone for now. I fear that I’ll never be able to move again like I used to (I could duck under cover pretty fast), it’s all an unknown right now. I’m stranded here and don’t know anyone in the region, and will face the next month without being able to move much at all, and with needing to pay people to take care of me and supervise me (paid nurses and physical therapists if I can find them but so far it’s been rough). But there are significant risks of staying here and limitations of the health care system. I worry about infections because they are fairly common in post-op surgeries of this kind, especially here, and I don’t want to go septic as there is a 17% mortality rate in Mexico. There are a handful of other complications as well that necessitate me being home and near better health care. Not to mention, very importantly, I will need a lot of good physical therapy to try to get back what I’ve lost. And soon.

While I absolutely hate asking people for anything, I am asking now. I not only have lost all of the money I made from playing music from January to May from out-of-pocket medical expenses (triple that actually), but I face a lot of bills coming up with paying for lodging, food, and caregivers. I also hope to fly home ASAP somehow, and will need to pay a medical escort, may need to pay a lot extra for that and special seating (I can’t sit upright at the moment), and may need special transport to the airport in a bed, etc. I will also lose all of my income for the next few months, and I had packed my schedule with shows for that time. Summers are when I make the vast majority of my living, and all of it is in danger.

I have to try to remain positive that I can get through this, get back to the US, and be at least 80-90% of what I was before the accident. You probably won’t see me in VRML or PAL finals this season, but I hope to play again in the next. Your help will go a long way in that. If you feel moved enough to donate, I thank you humbly in advance.
